As Christians and Muslims across Nigeria and the world embark on the sacred observances of Lent and Ramadan, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has urged adherents of both faiths to embrace the unique convergence as a divine opportunity to strengthen unity, deepen compassion, and promote peaceful coexistence.

In a message delivered to the people of Enugu State and Nigerians at large on Ash Wednesday, the governor described the simultaneous commencement of the two spiritual seasons as a powerful symbol of shared values that transcend religious differences. He noted that while methods of worship may vary, both Christianity and Islam uphold common principles of faith, sacrifice, discipline, charity, and devotion to God.
Speaking to journalists after attending Holy Mass to usher in the Lenten season at the Government House Chapel, Enugu, Mbah emphasized that Lent calls Christians to prayer, fasting, penitence, almsgiving, and renewed commitment to love and service. He added that Ramadan similarly invites Muslims into a month of fasting, reflection, charity, and spiritual discipline.
“Both seasons teach restraint, deepen empathy for the less privileged, and strengthen our resolve to live in righteousness and peace,” the governor stated.
He further described Ash Wednesday as a solemn reminder of human mortality and accountability. According to him, the reflection that “we are from dust, and to dust we shall return” should inspire leaders and citizens alike to reassess their actions and strive to become better individuals in service to society.
“It is a time for sober reflection and cutting down on excesses. We must use this period to become better versions of ourselves, as leaders, as workers, and as team players,” he said.
In his homily, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Reverend Calistus Onaga, urged Christians to remain steadfast in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, which he described as the three cardinal pillars of the Lenten season. He called on the faithful to approach the period with sincerity, humility, and renewed spiritual commitment.
Governor Mbah concluded by encouraging Nigerians to allow the sacred seasons to inspire acts of kindness, justice, and solidarity, stressing that the strength of the nation lies in its ability to uphold unity amid diversity.
