The Enugu State Government has addressed public concerns surrounding a trending report on the suspension of a health assistant trainee, Miss Stella Makuochukwu Eze, by Ezzy Healthcare College, clarifying that it has no role in the matter.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! In an official statement, the Government explained that Miss Eze is neither a student of any state-owned health institution nor an employee of the Enugu State Civil Service. It noted that her reported suspension was linked to an alleged breach of her institution’s code of conduct, describing the issue as an internal administrative matter within a private college, with no connection to the state government. The Government emphasized that it does not interfere in the internal affairs or disciplinary procedures of private institutions and is only providing clarification based on available information.
However, it disclosed that it has engaged the college authorities and other relevant stakeholders following concerns generated by a viral video involving the trainee and a colleague.
Reiterating its broader commitment, the Government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, affirmed its ongoing efforts to transform the healthcare sector in Enugu State. It highlighted that since the inception of the current administration, comprehensive reforms have been implemented following a detailed audit of the sector.
Among key initiatives, the Government pointed to the ongoing rollout of 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across all political wards in the state, aimed at improving access to quality primary healthcare. It added that over 2,250 healthcare workers have already been recruited to strengthen service delivery at the grassroots level.
The statement also noted that the rehabilitation of general hospitals is progressing, including facilities such as Uwani General Hospital, where the reported incident occurred.
In the area of medical education, the Government reported significant advancements, including the recent reaccreditation of the ESUT College of Medicine and the approval of an increased admission quota of 350 for Medicine and Surgery by the Medical Council—the highest among state-owned institutions in Nigeria.
Further highlighting its infrastructural strides, the Government revealed that the 300-bed Enugu International Hospital, a modern super-specialist facility designed to enhance advanced medical care and reduce outbound medical tourism, is nearing completion.
It added that extensive upgrades are ongoing at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane, including the construction of a twin six-floor Laboratory and Clinical Complex, a seven-floor Nursing Complex with an MRI Diagnostic Suite, and a new Accident and Emergency Department.
Additionally, the remodelling and expansion of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) Teaching Hospital, Igbo-Eno, has been completed, with recruitment of medical and allied professionals underway in preparation for full-scale operations.
The Government encouraged residents to make use of healthcare facilities within their communities and reaffirmed its openness to constructive feedback. It maintained that the administration remains committed to accountability, continuous improvement, and the delivery of quality healthcare services to all residents of the state.
The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, on April 4, 2026.
