CP GIWA ASSURES ADEQUATE SECURITY FOR ENUGU NORTH SENATORIAL BYE-ELECTION

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, has assured residents, voters, and stakeholders of adequate security ahead of the Enugu North Senatorial Bye-Election scheduled to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, mnipr, mnisma, the Police Command has put in place comprehensive security measures to guarantee a peaceful, orderly, and credible electoral process.

As part of these measures, restrictions on human and vehicular movements will be enforced across the six Local Government Areas (LGAs) that make up the Enugu North Senatorial District. The affected LGAs are Igbo-Etiti, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu, and Uzo-Uwani.

The movement restriction will take effect from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day. However, electoral officials and individuals engaged in verifiable essential duties will be exempted from the restriction.

To further strengthen security arrangements, CP Giwa disclosed that, on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, additional security personnel have been deployed to Enugu State. The reinforcements comprise officers and men drawn from Zone 13 Headquarters, the Anambra State Police Command, Police College Oji River, and Police Detective College Enugu.

The Commissioner noted that the newly deployed personnel would complement existing deployments from other security agencies operating within the state to ensure a secure environment before, during, and after the election.

CP Giwa also called on political parties, candidates, their supporters, and the electorate to conduct themselves peacefully and in accordance with the law throughout the electoral process. He warned that the Police Command would not tolerate acts of thuggery, ballot-box snatching, vote-buying, violence, or any other form of electoral malpractice.

He emphasized that individuals found engaging in electoral offences would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Furthermore, the Commissioner urged residents and eligible voters across the Senatorial Zone to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and security-conscious. He encouraged them to promptly report suspicious persons, activities, and any form of electoral malpractice to the nearest police station.

The Enugu State Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that the bye-election is conducted in a peaceful, free, fair, and secure atmosphere.
