According to the statement, operatives of the Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit attached to the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), acting on credible intelligence, stormed Banana Estate, Independence Layout, Enugu, on July 14 after receiving reports that suspected cultists were terrorising residents, robbing members of the public, vandalising property and trafficking hard drugs.
During the operation, police arrested Ogbodo Chebe, 40, an alleged member of the Abashie Confraternity and suspected youth leader, alongside Oguma Onyebuchi, 27. Officers recovered quantities of substances suspected to be “Colos,” while other suspects fled, abandoning eight motorcycles and one tricycle, which were recovered by the police.
In another operation conducted on July 7, officers raided criminal hideouts in the Emene and Eke Obinagu areas of Enugu, leading to the arrest of six suspects identified as Mba James Chinonso, Ani Nonso, Ike Nnana, Chiagozie Nnamani Isaac, Ede Onyenaturuchi, and Ozoemena Michael.
Police said large quantities of suspected Cannabis Sativa, methamphetamine (popularly known as “Mkpụrụ-mmiri”), and cocaine were recovered during the raid, disrupting alleged drug trafficking activities in the affected communities.
Earlier the same day, operatives also foiled a suspected public celebration marking the alleged 7/7 anniversary of the Black Axe (Aye) Confraternity at Owerre Eze-Oba community in Udenu Local Government Area, following intelligence reports that the gathering had caused panic among residents.
The operation resulted in the arrest of 12 suspected cultists, while officers recovered one axe, a set of drum instruments and 14 motorcycles believed to have been used by the group.
The Police Command said investigations are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects, establish the full extent of the criminal activities of those arrested and recover additional exhibits. It added that all suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Commending the operatives for the successful operations, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and sustained action against cultism, drug trafficking and other violent crimes.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains vital in enhancing safety and security across Enugu State.
