The Enugu State Government has approved a new wave of landmark infrastructure, housing and tourism projects aimed at accelerating development, attracting investments and strengthening the state’s economic transformation agenda.

The approvals were granted during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at the weekend, as part of the administration’s commitment to growing the state’s economy from $4 billion to $30 billion within eight years.

Briefing Government House Correspondents after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, alongside other members of the State Executive Council, disclosed that the approved projects cut across infrastructure, housing, tourism, agriculture, education and healthcare.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ben Osy Okoh, announced the approval for the completion and upgrade of Wings C and D of the Enugu State Secretariat Complex in GRA, Enugu, as well as the rehabilitation of Wings A and B.

He explained that the project would transform the Secretariat into a modern administrative complex with improved facilities, while addressing the structural challenges affecting the existing wings.

The Council also approved the construction of the 10.5-kilometre Igogoro–Amachara–Ikpamodo–Okpo–Amaada Road, which is expected to enhance connectivity, improve transportation and boost economic activities in the benefiting communities.

In addition, the government approved urgent intervention works on flood-prone areas along Nsukka major road, including the rehabilitation of damaged drainage systems, evacuation of blocked drainages and construction of five adjoining streets to address recurring flooding challenges.

The Ministry of Works will also receive over 30 pieces of light equipment to strengthen direct labour projects, maintenance operations and emergency infrastructure interventions across the state.

On housing development, the government approved the construction of 1,000 fully detached terrace housing units at the Enugu Smart City, comprising four-bedroom and five-bedroom units.

The state also approved the development of 18,000 mass housing units at Gateway Estate, Enugu, as part of efforts to reduce housing deficit, lower housing costs and provide residents with affordable and quality accommodation.

The housing projects will include supporting infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water supply and other essential services.

In the tourism sector, the Executive Council approved a number of major projects designed to position Enugu as a leading tourism destination in Nigeria.

Among the approved projects is the Ovu Lake Golf Resort at Akpawfu in Nkanu East Local Government Area, which will feature an 18-hole championship golf course, luxury hotel with over 100 rooms, a 600-seat conference centre, boat regatta, landscaped gardens, clubhouses, children’s playgrounds, lawn tennis and basketball courts, among other recreational facilities.

The Council also approved the Akwuke Tourism Development Project in Enugu South Local Government Area and the Attakwu Tourism Project in Nkanu West Local Government Area.

The Akwuke project will include a modern sand beach, theme park, water park, scenic boardwalk and recreational facilities, while the Attakwu project will transform its natural forest and lake into an ecotourism destination featuring an animal sanctuary and other nature-based attractions.

The government further approved the Okpatu–Awhum–Awgu Cable Car Project, a flagship tourism initiative that will connect the iconic Cross of Hope on Okpatu Hill to the Awhum Waterfall.

According to the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, the cable car system will span approximately 5.32 kilometres and feature three stations — the departure point at Okpatu Hill, an intermediate station at the Awhum Monastery, and the terminal station at Awhum Waterfall.

The project will also include attractions such as the Rotunda, Experience Centre and Food Court, providing visitors with a safe, scenic and memorable tourism experience.

The latest approvals reaffirm the Enugu State Government’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure, expanding housing opportunities, developing tourism assets and creating sustainable economic growth across the state.
