The Enugu State Government has suspended the traditional ruler of Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community in Enugu South Local Government Area, Igwe Christopher Nyia, over a festering leadership crisis and allegations of land grabbing and financial impropriety.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The suspension, approved by Governor Peter Mbah, was announced on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters, Dr. Charles Egumgbe, who handed the monarch his suspension letter.
Egumgbe disclosed that the state government has constituted an Administrative Panel of Inquiry to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the crisis, including the allegations levelled against the suspended traditional ruler.
According to the commissioner, the government’s decision was taken in the interest of peace, public order, and good governance, following months of unrest in the community.
The action comes weeks after residents of Obeagu Ugwuaji staged a peaceful protest on July 16, 2026, storming the Enugu State Secretariat Complex, the Enugu State House of Assembly, and the Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters to demand the immediate removal of the monarch.
The protesters accused Igwe Nyia of alleged land grabbing, financial misconduct, and actions they claimed had plunged the community into a prolonged leadership crisis.
The Administrative Panel of Inquiry is expected to investigate the allegations and submit its recommendations to the Enugu State Government for further action.
