Enugu State Drives Mass Adoption of NELFUND Education Support Across Tertiary Institutions

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has intensified efforts to ensure that eligible students across tertiary institutions in the state fully benefit from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) Education Support Programme.

Governor Mbah hosted a strategic sensitisation and implementation session with the Executive Management of NELFUND, led by its Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, alongside Vice Chancellors, Rectors, Provosts and senior representatives of tertiary institutions across the state.

The engagement, spearheaded by the Enugu State Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Enugu MSME & Startup Agency, is aimed at significantly increasing awareness and participation in the Federal Government’s education financing programme.

The state government expressed concern over the relatively low uptake of NELFUND support in Enugu and the wider South-East, prompting the adoption of a deliberate institution-by-institution strategy to mobilise eligible students, address misconceptions and provide practical assistance throughout the application and verification processes.

Under the NELFUND programme, eligible students can access financial support for institutional fees and upkeep, a development expected to ease the financial burden on families, improve student retention and strengthen the capacity of institutions to meet their financial obligations.

Governor Mbah emphasised the importance of full participation by all tertiary institutions in the state, directing them to establish dedicated NELFUND support desks, actively mobilise students, assist applicants and ensure timely institutional verification.

The initiative forms part of the broader commitment of the Enugu State Government to expand access to education, promote human capital development and ensure that financial constraints do not prevent qualified students from pursuing higher education.

With the renewed push, the state government is urging eligible students in public tertiary institutions to take advantage of the opportunity and apply through the official NELFUND portal.
