Enugu Restricts Movement Saturday for LG Elections

The Enugu State Government has ordered a restriction of vehicular movement across the state on Saturday, September 26, as the state goes to the polls to elect chairmen and councillors for its 17 local government areas.

The restriction, which takes effect from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly and secure conduct of the local government elections being organised by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission, ENSIEC.

In a public service announcement signed on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the government said no vehicular movement or other forms of transportation would be permitted across the state during the restricted hours, except for those performing essential election, security, medical and emergency duties.

Exempted from the restriction are ENSIEC officials and accredited election personnel, security operatives deployed for election duties, accredited election observers, authorised media practitioners, health workers, ambulances, firefighters and other persons expressly authorised to undertake essential election or emergency services.

The government urged residents, political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders to comply with the directive and conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the elections.

It also called on voters to exercise their civic responsibilities peacefully and in accordance with guidelines issued by ENSIEC and other relevant authorities.

Security agencies, the statement said, had been directed to enforce the restriction strictly while maintaining law and order throughout the electoral process.

The Saturday election will determine the occupants of the 17 Local Government Council chairmanship positions and 260 councillorship seats across Enugu State.

The government appealed for the cooperation and understanding of residents, acknowledging that the temporary restriction could cause inconvenience, but stressing that the measure was part of efforts to guarantee a peaceful, orderly and secure election.
