…As SUMAS VC, SUG, SUMASTH Management, Medical Staff Applaud Mbah’s Water Intervention
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The Enugu State Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA) has commissioned four rehabilitated mega borehole projects at the Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), its Teaching Hospital (SUMASTH), and the Mother and Child Hospital, Igbo-Eno, under the Enugu State Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (EN-CARES) programme.

The projects, executed to improve access to potable water and strengthen basic service delivery, represent a major intervention by the administration of Governor Peter Mbah in addressing water supply challenges confronting educational and healthcare institutions across the state.

At SUMAS, the CSDA commissioned one rehabilitated ultra-modern mega borehole serving thousands of students, particularly those residing in the male hostel.
Two additional mega boreholes were commissioned at the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences Teaching Hospital, where they now provide water for management, medical personnel, other staff and hundreds of patients who rely on the facility daily.

The water supply is reticulated across the hospital’s facilities, making it available for critical activities, including healthcare delivery, hygiene and sanitation.

Another rehabilitated borehole was commissioned at the Mother and Child Hospital, Igbo-Eno, bringing the total number of rehabilitated and commissioned boreholes across the three institutions to four.

The intervention is particularly significant given the growing population of SUMAS and the increasing demand for water at the healthcare facilities, where uninterrupted access to water is essential for effective service delivery.

Speaking during the commissioning, the Vice-Chancellor of SUMAS, Prof. James Ogbonna, expressed appreciation to the Enugu State Government and the CSDA for the intervention, describing it as timely.

Prof. Ogbonna said the intervention came at a critical period as students return to campus and the university continues to expand its academic programmes, infrastructure and student population.

He highlighted the rapid development of the young university, noting its growing academic offerings and infrastructure, which he attributed to the administration’s interventions and support under Governor Peter Mbah.

According to him, the institution is working towards admitting thousands of additional students, while offering programmes including Pharmacology, Nanotechnology, Dentistry, Prosthetics and Nanomedicine, among others.
The Vice-Chancellor also listed the completion of the university’s library building and administrative block among its achievements, while disclosing ongoing efforts to attract major development projects in solar power, artificial intelligence and faculty infrastructure.

He further disclosed that the university’s maiden convocation ceremony was scheduled for December.
Prof. Ogbonna stressed that reliable water supply remained critical to the smooth running of the university, particularly with the increasing number of students and the expansion of its academic and medical services.
He therefore described the CSDA intervention under EN-CARES as a practical response to an important need within the university community.
The President of the SUMAS Students’ Union Government, Rt. Comr. Cletus Ikeuwa, also commended Governor Mbah for responding to the water needs of students through the CSDA interventions.

Ikeuwa expressed gratitude to the state government, stressing that the project had brought significant relief to students, particularly those residing in the male hostel.
At SUMASTH and the Mother and Child Hospital, members of management, medical staff and patients also expressed appreciation to the Governor for the intervention.
They noted that reliable water supply was essential to maintaining hygiene, sanitation and effective healthcare delivery, particularly in facilities attending to large numbers of patients daily.

The beneficiaries also commended the General Manager of the CSDA, Hon. Monday Diamond Ani, describing him as a proactive and responsive leader whose interventions had addressed critical needs within the institutions.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager of CSDA, Hon Monday Diamond Ani, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to addressing critical basic-service challenges through interventions designed to directly improve the welfare of beneficiaries under EN-CARES.
Ani, who was accompanied by the Member representing Igbo-Eze Constituency II in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Clifford Obe, and other CSDA officials, emphasised the importance of ensuring that projects respond to identified needs and are implemented in accordance with established CSDA procedures and guidelines.
He assured the beneficiaries of the continued support of Governor Peter Mbah for CSDA interventions aimed at addressing pressing infrastructure and basic-service needs across communities and public institutions.
The commissioning of the four borehole projects highlights the Enugu State Government’s commitment, through the CSDA under EN-CARES programme, to improving access to essential services and strengthening institutions that contribute to education and healthcare delivery.

It also reinforces the CSDA’s mandate of promoting community-driven development and ensuring that critical infrastructure reaches the people and institutions where it is most needed.
