The Enugu State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing the alleged torture and degrading treatment of a woman in Amafu Village, Ugbawka, in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, which reportedly involved the alleged trial by ordeal of the victim, identified as Chinenye Okonkwo, a woman aged about 60.

In a press release issued on October 12, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that operatives attached to the Nkanu East Police Division had visited the victim and obtained her statement as part of the ongoing investigation.

According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that the woman was allegedly subjected to severe abuse, including being forced to eat human faeces following accusations of witchcraft and claims that she was responsible for the death of her husband’s brother’s wife.

The police said efforts were underway to identify and apprehend those allegedly involved in the incident, noting that the suspects were still at large as of the time of the statement.

Condemning the alleged acts of violence and degrading treatment, CP Giwa ordered a comprehensive investigation and directed operatives to intensify efforts to arrest the suspects and their accomplices.

The police commissioner also warned against jungle justice and other forms of self-help, stressing that allegations of wrongdoing must be handled through lawful procedures rather than violence or public humiliation.

He assured the public that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice in accordance with the law.

The command urged members of the public to respect the rights and dignity of others and allow the appropriate authorities to investigate allegations of wrongdoing.

The statement was signed by SP Daniel Ndukwe, mnipr, mnisma, Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, and dated October 12, 2026.
