The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the lawmaker and the student community, with particular emphasis on educational opportunities, graduate development and youth empowerment.
During the engagement, the student leaders outlined key concerns affecting students and graduates across the constituency. These included inadequate educational infrastructure, the need for increased scholarship opportunities, financial support for indigent students, employment opportunities for graduates, and transparent access to empowerment programmes and other government interventions.
They also called for a stronger partnership between the lawmaker’s office and student associations to ensure that programmes designed to support young people are inclusive, accessible and responsive to their needs.
Responding, Onwuegbu commended the student leaders for their visit and emphasised the importance of unity, discipline and responsible leadership in advancing the interests of their respective communities. He urged them to remain focused and committed to representing the aspirations of students with integrity.
The lawmaker reaffirmed that his scholarship scheme remains ongoing, noting that scholarships have already been awarded to deserving students. He also reiterated his commitment to expanding the initiative to accommodate students from different wards across Greater Awgu.
On youth empowerment, Onwuegbu disclosed plans for a major empowerment programme before the end of 2026, with November and December being considered as the proposed implementation period.
He further expressed his willingness to assist students seeking admission into their preferred institutions, advising them to approach his office for appropriate guidance and support.
Addressing concerns about graduate unemployment, the federal lawmaker encouraged unemployed graduates across Greater Awgu to engage his office for assistance with job recommendations and available employment opportunities.
GRADUATE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
On the students’ request for bursary support, Onwuegbu explained that his office had engaged a consultant to develop a structured programme focused on graduate skills development and internship placements.
Under the proposed initiative, selected beneficiaries would undergo professional training and on-the-job internships lasting between six months and one year in organised companies and institutions, with the programme’s costs to be funded by his office.
The initiative is intended to equip participating graduates with practical skills, relevant workplace experience and professional competencies that could improve their employability or prepare them to establish their own businesses.
According to the proposed framework, beneficiaries would also receive stipends to support their upkeep throughout the internship period.
The programme is designed to promote sustainable livelihoods by enabling young graduates to acquire practical work experience, develop professional ethics and build the capacity required to compete in the labour market, rather than relying exclusively on one-off financial assistance.
The initiative represents a proposed approach to addressing graduate unemployment through practical training, workplace exposure and improved access to employment opportunities.
In his concluding remarks, the National President of the Oji-River Students Association, Rt. Comr. Offor Alexander Uche, popularly known as Demoon Global, urged political leaders to remain intentional, transparent and accountable in pursuing their commitments to young people.
He welcomed the explanations and assurances provided by the lawmaker, stressing the importance of translating commitments into tangible benefits for students and graduates across the constituency.
