The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its planned nationwide protest against the recent 50% hike in telecom tariffs approved by the Federal Government. The decision was made after a meeting between the NLC and government representatives at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday night.

According to NLC President, Joe Ajaero, the government agreed to set up a larger committee to review the entire tariff structure. The committee, which will comprise five representatives from both the government and the NLC, is expected to submit its findings within two weeks.

Ajaero emphasized that the NLC is the largest organization in Africa and that no stakeholder consultation can exclude them. “We emphasized that the NLC is the largest organisation in Africa, and no stakeholder consultation can exclude us and still stand,” he said.

The NLC had initially planned to embark on a nationwide mass rally on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, to protest the telecom tariff hike. However, with the suspension of the protest, the union will now wait for the outcome of the committee’s work before determining its next line of action.

Ajaero stated that the union’s next steps, including protests, boycotts, or service withdrawals, would depend on the outcome of the committee’s work. “The outcome of such a committee is what will determine our next line of action in terms of protest, in terms of boycott, and in terms of even withdrawal of services, which are the three issues we put online,” he said.
