Upon resuming office, the first thought that came to Engr. Hyginus Ogbonnia Agu’s mind were: “What can we do to leave a lasting legacy within two years? How can we touch the lives of every person in Udi? What are the small challenges our people face in their various political wards, and how can we find solutions?” These thought-provoking and creative questions led the current Udi Local Government administration to champion a remarkable number of projects scattered across the wards. The administration began by conducting a situational analysis to determine the specific needs of each political ward.

In a bid to fulfill a major promise made during his campaign—that his administration would not abandon projects started by previous administrations—the Local Government Chairman, Engr. Hyginus Ogbonnia Agu, initiated several key projects. His administration has since carried out the reinforcement and roofing of the Udi Ultra Modern Hall; completed the Udi Headquarters fencing, including the installation of a new gate and beautification of the Local Government Headquarters; and is currently constructing the Udi Chairman’s Lodge. He has also rehabilitated the Udi Council Headquarters Borehole, with water now reticulated to serve residents at Orie Agu Market, completed the Udi High Court Building, and installed a solar-powered energy system at the Headquarters.

Following the needs assessment, Engr. Hyginus Ogbonnia Agu’s team also implemented intervention projects in many Wards. This includes the introduction and installation of dumpsters at various strategic locations throughout the Udi Local Government Area. In Affa/Ikono/Oghu Ward, the administration supplied and installed a 300KVA transformer and extended the 33 lines. They have also undertaken gradual maintenance of potholes along the Eke-Ebe-Egede-Affa road. The administration rehabilitated the Okwu-Water borehole, installing new pumps and solar panels to serve the target community. Engr. Agu’s administration also purchased and installed a 33KVA transformer at Umualla in the Umuoka community.

The administration is also championing the construction of the 8.5KM Umuoka-Umulumgbe road to ease intra- and inter-community transportation, enhance security, and boost economic and social development within the area and beyond. Other key projects include the building renovation of the Amokwe Town Hall/Magistrate Court in Amokwe Ward. There is also the construction of erosion control system from the ICT Centre to the Abor maternity road in Abor Ward and Erosion control intervention in Akpakwume Nze Ward. Erosion control measures were also implemented in Akpakwume/Nze Ward. Engr. Hyginus Agu understands that erosion control prevents flooding by keeping drains clear, helps stabilize slopes and land, reduces road accidents, and enhances development projects.

Other projects being championed by the amiable and compassionate Mayor of Udi, Engr. Hyginus Ogbonnia Agu, and his administration include the clearing of the perimeter area of the Egede-Umuoka Ward Farm Estate, ongoing work at the Umuabi Ward Farm Estate; the procurement and installation of a 500KVA transformer in Obinagu Ward. In the Ngwo/9th Mile axis, the Mayor constructed modern abattoirs to end open defecation (ODF). In Abia Ward, Engr. Hyginus Ogbonnia Agu led is constructing the road leading to the Abia Smart School.

In terms of security, the Mayor has ensured that the Udi Neighbourhood Watch receives their salaries on time. His administration has also procured security gadgets and uniforms, enabling the Neighborhood Watch members across all 20 wards to communicate with one another in real time, which enhances efficient grassroots policing. Furthermore, Engr. Hyginus Ogbonnia Agu and his team renovated Ani Hall in Okpattu Ward.

Aside infrastructural development, Engr. Hyginus Ogbonnia Agu has also shown a keen interest in engaging all relevant stakeholders, such as the Igwes, the PGs, former Udi LGA Executive Chairmen, former administrators of Development Centres, the media, to mention a few. The current administration is also committed to ensuring that all state projects in the Udi Local Government Area—being carried out by His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, such as the Smart Schools and Type II Primary Healthcare facilities in all 20 wards—meet their targets. In addition to commissioning a committee that includes the councilor of each ward to monitor these projects, Engr. Hyginus Ogbonnia Agu has made it a duty to personally carry out ward-to-ward inspections by himself.

…Echoing the “Tomorrow Is Here” mantra in Udi.
