NAWOJ South-East Zonal Executive Committee Meets in Enugu, Issues Strategic Resolutions on Governance, Safety, Women’s Welfare

The South-East Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) convened a critical zonal meeting on Friday, 14th November 2025, at Lyon De Gold Hotel, adjacent to the NUJ Enugu State Secretariat, No. 4 Rangers Avenue, Independence Layout, Enugu. The session, presided over by the National Vice President, Zone C, Comrade Amaka Agbo, was hosted by the Enugu State Chapter of NAWOJ.

The meeting provided an extensive review of the association’s programmes, achievements, challenges, and future strategies. At the conclusion of deliberations, the ZEC issued a series of resolutions aimed at promoting women’s welfare, public safety, and regional development.

Key Resolutions:

1. Commendation to Imo State Governor
The ZEC praised Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State for his support in hosting the upcoming NAWOJ National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting, highlighting his commitment to sponsoring the event and showcasing the development initiatives of the South-East region.

2. Congratulations to Anambra State Governor
Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State was congratulated on his victory in the recent governorship election.

3. Recognition of Enugu State Leadership
The ZEC lauded Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and the First Lady for notable achievements within their first two years in office, particularly initiatives focused on improving the welfare of women and children.

4. Maternal Health Advisory
Pregnant women were urged to seek antenatal care at accredited healthcare facilities to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity. The committee also called on healthcare professionals to adopt proactive measures in safeguarding maternal health.

5. Condemnation of Sexual Violence Against Minors
The ZEC strongly condemned the increasing cases of rape involving minors nationwide and called on relevant agencies to enforce stringent measures to prevent such crimes and ensure justice for victims.

6. Safety Advisory on Online Dating
Young girls were advised to exercise caution in online interactions. Physical meetings should be conducted in public places and ideally with friends or family members present.

7. Commendation to the National Assembly
The committee commended the National Assembly for passing legislation banning the sale of sachet alcohol, citing its contribution to youth restiveness, health issues, and other societal vices.

8. Road Safety Appeal
With the festive season approaching, the ZEC urged drivers and all road users in the South-East to exercise heightened caution to protect lives and property.

9. Condolence Message
The ZEC observed a one-minute silence in honour of Mrs. Ozioma Okereke of the Abia State Chapter, who recently passed away. The committee extended prayers for the peaceful repose of her soul and urged her family to bear the loss with fortitude.

10. Goodwill for the Forthcoming NEC Meeting
Members travelling to Imo State for the forthcoming NEC Meeting were wished safe journeys, with assurances of a memorable and productive event.
