U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the operations killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior officials. Trump described the strikes as part of a broader effort to dismantle the Iranian regime and indicated that military action would continue as necessary. Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, supported the U.S. account, stating that the strikes were aimed at neutralizing what they consider an existential threat from Iran.

Iranian authorities, however, have denied that Khamenei was killed. Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, stated that the Supreme Leader and other top leaders were safe, and condemned the attacks as unlawful aggression. Independent verification of Khamenei’s status remains unavailable.

Reports indicate that more than 200 people have been killed in Iran, including civilians, with hundreds more wounded. In response, Iran launched retaliatory missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. military bases and Israeli positions across the region, including in Gulf Arab states. Some missiles were intercepted, but civilian casualties have been reported, and airspace closures disrupted travel in multiple countries. The U.S. military reported no combat-related casualties to date.

The conflict has drawn international concern. The United Nations called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, warning of potential regional instability. European governments urged restraint and emphasized the need to protect civilians and pursue diplomatic solutions. Gulf states condemned the retaliatory strikes but also expressed concern over the initial U.S. and Israeli assault.

Analysts warn that the ongoing operations could escalate into a wider regional conflict with significant humanitarian and economic consequences, including disruptions to oil shipments and global markets. The uncertainty surrounding Iran’s leadership adds further complexity to the crisis.
