Ike Sampson Emerges as Umuagba Community Elects New President General in Peaceful Delegate Election

Umuagba Autonomous Community, located in Imeziowa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, has elected a new President General (PG) for its Town Union, marking a fresh chapter of leadership and unity for the community.

Following a court verdict which cleared the path for the election, Mr. Ike Sampson emerged victorious on Friday, July 25, 2025, defeating his sole rival, Mr. Nnanyelogu Udeh, by securing 42 votes against Udeh’s 14. The election recorded 59 valid votes and only 3 invalid ballots.

The keenly contested election was held at the Umuezedume Community Hall, Umuagba Imeziowa, and was conducted through a delegate system which ensured that six accredited representatives from each of the community’s 12 villages participated in the voting process.

Announcing the results, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr. Calistus Ibe, declared Mr. Sampson duly elected, stating that the election was conducted strictly in line with the constitution of the town union.

“Mr. Ike Sampson scored a total of 42 votes to defeat his fellow contestant, Nnanyelogu Udeh, who got 14 votes. Therefore, by the power conferred on me, Mr. Ike Sampson is hereby elected,” Mr. Ibe declared.

The peaceful election was monitored by officials from the Enugu State Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Matters. The Commissioner, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, represented by the Director for Town Unions, Mrs. Queendaline Odike, commended the electoral committee for ensuring a free, fair, and credible exercise.

She urged the newly elected executives to uphold the rule of law and sustain the peaceful atmosphere witnessed during the election.

Also speaking at the event, Prince Ozobu, a member of the Traditional Rulers Council, described the election as transparent and credible. He noted that the peaceful process has restored harmony in the community and congratulated the winners.

The Deputy Chairman of Ezeagu Local Government, Mrs. Nkeiru Ugwuagu, who was also in attendance, lauded the election as credible and peaceful, applauding the presence and supervision of the state ministry and other stakeholders.

Speaking shortly after the announcement, the Electoral Committee Chairman, Mr. Ibe, expressed his joy at the smooth conduct of the election, stressing that the process had finally resolved the leadership crisis that had plagued the community for years.

Mr. Paul Okongwu – Vice President General

Mr. Okechi Fidel Chika – Secretary General

In his acceptance speech, the President General-elect, Mr. Ike Sampson, thanked the people for their confidence in him, pledged to carry all stakeholders along, and promised to prioritise youth involvement in community affairs.

The peaceful conduct of the election has been widely welcomed by stakeholders, who believe it will usher in a new era of unity and development for Umuagba Community.
