In a significant endorsement of grassroots leadership, the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, has been honoured with the prestigious Medals Excellence Award for Outstanding Local Government Chairmen (MEXA 2025).
The award, presented by The Medals Magazine in collaboration with the MEXA Nomination Committee, recognises Hon. Okolo’s exceptional contributions to community development, human empowerment, and transparent local governance. It is regarded as one of the highest honours bestowed on local government leaders in Nigeria.
Hon. Okolo emerged among a select group of recipients following a rigorous evaluation process that included public feedback, performance metrics, and national media attention—most notably a feature article in The Punch Newspaper highlighting his developmental milestones in Awgu.
Despite operating within the constraints of limited financial and infrastructural resources, the Awgu Council Chairman has implemented a range of transformative, people-centred projects aimed at improving lives in rural communities. His leadership has been defined by a strong emphasis on inclusivity, accountability, and sustainable development—qualities that have earned him growing acclaim across the region.
In addition to the award, Hon. Okolo is scheduled to participate in a high-level Workshop on Accelerated Grassroots Development, taking place on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. The event will bring together top-performing local government officials from across the country to share innovative governance strategies and best practices tailored to rural advancement.
Speaking on the award, MEXA Project Coordinator, Mr. Ilesanmi Olayoriiju, described Hon. Okolo as “a selfless and worthy leader whose transformative vision has positively impacted lives at the grassroots. His performance sets a benchmark for others in public service.”
This latest accolade joins a growing list of recognitions attributed to Hon. Uchenna Okolo, further solidifying his reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading voices in progressive local government administration.
